Tangshan University is located in Tangshan, Hebei Province—a city renowned as the cradle of China’s modern industry and the “treasure land” east of Beijing. It is a full-time public undergraduate institution. Founded in 1956, Tangshan University was officially established in 2002 through the merger of Tangshan Higher Institute of Technology, Southwest Jiaotong University Tangshan Branch, and Tangshan Workers’ University. Between 2014 and 2015, Tangshan Branch of Hebei University of Science and Technology and Tangshan School of Foreign Trade and Economy were successively integrated into the university. Now it has evolved into a multidisciplinary university with engineering as its core, complemented by coordinated development in economics, management, humanities, law, and the arts. The university aims to become a high-level international application-oriented institution, dedicated to cultivating high-quality applied talents.
The university operates multiple campuses—including West Daxue Road Campus, North Huayan Road Campus, etc.—covering a total area of approximately 227 acres, with a building area of 700,000 square meters. It currently enrolls nearly 19,000 full-time undergraduate students and over 3,100 adult education students. There are 18 teaching units offering 55 undergraduate programs and two Chinese-foreign cooperative education programs. Tangshan University has established robust research infrastructure, including three provincial key discipline laboratories, two Hebei Provincial Applied Technology R&D Centers, three Technology Mission Teams for "Little Giant" Enterprises (Specialized, Refined, Characteristic, Innovative), one Provincial High-Quality Service Institution for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises, one Provincial Industrial Energy-Saving Diagnosis Service Institution, and numerous municipal-level research platforms.
Committed to the fundamental mission of fostering virtue in education, the university boasts a strong track record: graduate employment placement rates rank among the top in similar institutions within Hebei Province. It has received multiple national and provincial honors, with students earning awards such as the “Chinese College Student Self-Reliance Star Scholarship.” The institution features three key developing disciplines at the provincial level, 2 provincial application-oriented transformation model programs, one Huang Dainian-style faculty team, 14 provincial first-class majors, and two national first-class undergraduate courses. Notably, 98% of its 55 undergraduate programs are application-oriented, closely matching Tangshan’s industrial structure.
In recent years, faculty and students have won over 200 national and provincial teaching and research awards, while students have earned more than 3,000 provincial or above awards in academic competitions. In October–November 2024, the university successfully passed the national educational and teaching quality audit and evaluation, with its production-education integration model receiving high recognition.
The university employs 1,405 staff members, of whom 91.44% of full-time teachers hold master's or doctoral degrees. It is home to distinguished educators including 15 Hebei Provincial Teaching Masters and 10 provincial and municipal outstanding young experts in social sciences.
Tangshan University is strategically advancing its “Intelligent+” discipline clusters, building a “One Body, Two Wings” disciplinary system centered on engineering, with integrated development of applied humanities and art disciplines, forming a “2+4+3” disciplinary layout. In December 2024, it was approved as a candidate institution for master’s degree in Hebei Province’s new round of postgraduate education expansion, and this initiative has been listed as a key priority for Tangshan City in 2025.
To deepen integration between education and industry, since 2023 the university has fully implemented a strategic framework of university-enterprise cooperation, production-education integration, and university-local government joint innovation. It established the Tangshan Industrial-Educational Integration Development Research Center, and has formed partnerships with over 20 county-level districts and more than 500 enterprises. Since 2022, it has signed 890 technology transfer and service contracts with enterprises, with 533 Hebei Provincial Science and Technology Commissioners serving 582 enterprises—ranking first among provincial municipal universities in these indicators.
Internationally, the university actively promotes global engagement through cooperative programs with institutions such as Federal National Budget Higher Education Institution National Research University Moscow Power Engineering Institute, Russia and Accademia di Belle Arti di Macerata in Italy. It has joined international higher education alliances and established three overseas internship bases.
Looking ahead, Tangshan University will continue to uphold its motto: " Embrace Integrity and Diligence in Conduct; Uphold Rigor and Truth in Academic Pursuit." Seizing development opportunities, it remains committed to deepening its application-oriented transformation and contributing to regional development.
