School of New Materials and Chemical Engineering, one of the earliest established departments at Tangshan University, traces its origin back to the Department of Chemical Engineering founded in 1986. It was renamed Department of Environmental and Chemical Engineering in 2002, and then School of New Materials and Chemical Engineering in December, 2021.
The School offers four undergraduate programs, including New Energy Materials and Devices, Chemical Engineering and Technology, Environmental Engineering, and Safety Engineering. Among them, Chemical Engineering and Technology is recognized as Provincial First-Class Undergraduate Major, while New Energy Materials and Devices is designated as School-Level First-Class Major. The School has 74 faculty members, including 9 professors, 22 associate professors, and 38 lecturers, with 35 holding doctoral degrees and 35 possessing master’s degrees. Meanwhile, 37 faculty members are recognized as Dual-Qualified Teachers, namely teachers certified both in teaching and in a professional trade. Many faculty members have received honors honors such as Hebei Provincial Model of Teacher Ethics, Hebei “Three-Three-Three Talent Project” recipient, Hebei Provincial Innovation and Entrepreneurship Teaching Master, Tangshan Excellent Teacher, Teaching Master of Tangshan University, and Model of Science and Technology of Tangshan University. The School also boasts one Hebei Provincial Excellent Innovation and Entrepreneurship Teaching Team and two School-Level Excellent Teaching Teams, contributing to the establishment of a high-quality, high-proficiency faculty characterized by balanced structure, professional excellence, rigorous scholarship, and collaborative innovation.
The School possesses well-established teaching and research platforms and has built 31 laboratories dedicated to different subjects including New Energy Materials and Devices, Chemical Engineering Principles, Fine Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Instrumental Analysis, and Safety Engineering. It is home to Hebei Provincial Demonstration Center for Experimental Teaching of Environmental Engineering, and Tangshan Municipal Platform for Graphene Application Technology and Public Service, as well as three Tangshan Municipal Key Laboratories dedicated to Fine Chemical Engineering, Chemical Environmental Protection and New Thin-Film Coating Materials, and Water Environment Restoration and Aquatic Ecosystem Management, respectively. The laboratories cover a total area of nearly 3,700 square meters and are equipped with over 1,800 sets of state-of-the-art experimental instruments, including a Fourier-transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectrometer from Thermo Fisher Scientific (USA), an X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) Spectrometer from Bruker (Germany), an Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) from Oxford Instruments (UK), and an X-ray Photoelectron Spectrometer (XPS) from Shimadzu (Japan), with the total asset value exceeding 33 million RMB.
The School actively engages in scientific research and social services, achieving fruitful results. In recent years, the faculty members have obtained over 140 national patents, participated in 2 projects funded by National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) General Program, led and completed 2 projects under Hebei Provincial Natural Science Foundation, as well as over 50 other provincial and municipal research projects. The faculty have also published more than 410 papers in important academic journals at home and abroad, of which over 80 have been indexed by SCI, EI, or the Chemical Abstracts Service. The Platform for Graphene Application Technology and Public Service transforms scientific research achievements into productive forces, serving various universities and enterprises. The School also actively promotes University-Industry Collaboration??, establishing Industry-University-Research Internship and Practice Bases collaboratively with several large and well-known enterprises. It currently has 13 Industry-University-Research Cooperation bases and 33 internship bases. Furthermore, the School offers an experimental class for cultivating outstanding talents in “New Material and Intelligent Manufacturing”, and has established two Modern Industrial Colleges: Clean Energy and Energy Storage Technology Industrial College, and Intelligent Environmental Protection Industrial College, along with one Tangshan Enterprise Clinic. Up to now, the Enterprise Clinic of New Energy Materials and Energy Storage Devices has provided services to several enterprises including Hebei Lingdian New Energy Technology Co., Ltd. and Tangshan Guoxuan Battery Co., Ltd., while actively exploring new service areas.
Adhering to the educational philosophy of “Fostering Virtue and Cultivating Talent, Integrating Industry and Education, and Weaving Research into Education”, and motivated by technological innovation, the School endeavours to build a talent cultivation model characterized by "industrial awareness, practical skill training, project-driven approach and industry-academia-research-application integration", and constantly improve the quality of talent cultivation based on its rich University-Industry Collaboration?? resources and strong faculty expertise. As a result, students of the School have been actively participating in various academic competitions, and won over 160 awards in recent years. They consistently achieve the highest pass and admission rates in graduate school entrance exams and maintain a high graduate placement rate. In the future, the School will continue to actively strive for progress, forge ahead in innovation, and cultivate more high-quality application-oriented talents with innovative spirit and practical abilities for the society.
