The School of Law and Humanities was founded in 1994, originally named the Department of Social Sciences. After more than three decades of development, it now offers three undergraduate majors: Law, Chinese Language and Literature, and Secretarial Studies, along with a minor degree program in Law. A disciplinary framework has been established that features the provincial-level first-class major in Law as the core, together with the university-level first-class major in Chinese Language and Literature and the Administrative Assistant Experimental Class in Secretarial Studies as its two wings. The School has formed a hierarchical development structure of curriculum comprising provincial-level ideological and political model courses, university-level first-class courses, and school-level first-class courses, achieving remarkable results characterized by the “four high standards”: high social recognition, high admission scores, high major–employment matching, and high employment quality.
The School currently has 60 faculty and staff members, among whom 52 are full-time teachers. The faculty includes 18 members with senior professional titles, and 22 with doctoral degrees, while all remaining faculty members hold master’s degrees. Among the full-time teachers, two are part-time master’s supervisors at other universities; one has been selected for the National Prosecutorial Education and Training Faculty Program; one is a standing director of the Hebei Law Society’s Procuratorial Theory Research Association; two serve on the Hebei People’s Procuratorate Expert Advisory Committee for Civil and Administrative Supervision Cases; and one is a member of the Hebei Education Science Planning Expert Review Panel. Additionally, the faculty includes one candidate for the third level of Hebei "Three-Three-Three Talent Project", one Hebei Provincial Teaching Master, one Tangshan “Phoenix Youth Talent” , one Tangshan Top Ten Teacher, one Tangshan Excellent Teacher, one Tangshan Excellent Communist Youth League Cadre; and, at university level, one Distinguished Teacher, three Excellent Teachers, four Teaching Masters, two Teaching Pacesetters, three Science and Technology Pacesetters, one Advanced Individual in "Three Aspects of Education” and three Advanced Individuals in Ideological and Political Work.
The School of Law and Humanities features a resource room holding a collection of over 30,000 volumes and is equipped with a Legal Profession Training Center, a Document Writing and Processing Training Laboratory, a Comprehensive Secretarial Training Laboratory, and over 20 off-campus internship and employment bases (such as Hebei Fuhang Law Firm, Hebei Yuebin Law Firm, and Tangshan Central Branch of China Ping An Property & Casualty Insurance Co., Ltd.). These resources provide strong support for both theoretical learning and practical training, ensuring students’ well-rounded academic and professional development.
The School fully leverages the leadership and exemplary role of the teachers with Senior Professional Title and advanced degrees to promote organized scientific research. It has established several research centers, including the Tangshan Research Center for Clean and Honest Culture in the New Era, the Tangshan University Demonstration Center for Ideological and Political Education in Courses, the School Research Center for Social Governance, the School Research Center for Local Opera, and the Research Center for Li Dazhao’s Literary and Artistic Thought. By integrating resources, refining research directions, and building collaborative teams, the School has undertaken two projects funded by the Ministry of Education’s Humanities and Social Sciences Program and more than ten provincial-level projects, including those funded by the Hebei Social Science Fund, the Hebei Social Science Development Program, and the Hebei High-Level Talent Fund. Over ten academic monographs have been published, and more than twenty papers have appeared in CSSCI and Peking University core journals. At the same time, the School explores innovative, locally grounded and institution-specific approaches to curriculum-based ideological and political education. By combining the disciplinary features of humanities and social sciences with the mission of transmitting local culture, the School offers the elective course Jidong Literature and Culture, and faculty members have compiled two textbooks—The Course of Tangshan Industrial Civilization and Interpretations of the Tangshan Spirit—which serve as university-specific teaching materials integrated into the talent cultivation process.
Committed to cultivating application-oriented talents, the School actively promotes cooperation between industry and academia as well as partnerships with local governments. It has jointly established the “Tangshan University Collaborative Training Base for Intellectual Property Talents” with the Tangshan Administration for Market Regulation (Intellectual Property Office), the “Fuhang Excellence in Legal Talent Experimental Class” with Hebei Fuhang Law Firm, and the “Intellectual Property Law” industry–education integrated course with Hebei Yuebing Law Firm. Through classroom instruction, practical training, thematic lectures, and thesis guidance, industry experts participate directly in student training, creating a new model for law education that integrates academic learning with legal practice. Leveraging its disciplinary strengths, the School has developed a distinctive ideological and political education brand centered on the theme of “shaping minds through culture.” Guided by the principle of “cultivating people through culture and virtue,” it uses excellent culture to inspire, educate, and shape students’ character. It leverages three student societies —— the Qiu Huang Drama Club, the Debating Society, and the Secretarial Association, as well as the “three xin” lecture series ( Huixin Wenyun, Zhengxin Fazhi, Runxin Miyu) to enhance educational effectiveness and support holistic student development. In recent years, the School of Humanities and Law has received multiple honors, including recognition as a “Four-Strong and Four-Good” grassroots Party organization within Tangshan’s municipal education system, an “Outstanding Youth League Branch (Committee)” of Tangshan City, and a “Model Party Branch” and “Pacesetter School” of Tangshan University.
