Established in 1956, School of Civil Engineering is one of the earliest and leading engineering faculties at Tangshan University. In 1996, the School began to run a key undergraduate program in Civil Engineering jointly with Southwest Jiaotong University (SWJTU) and cultivated graduates over the span of 8 years. Regular undergraduate education in Civil Engineering began in 2002. In 2013, with the approval of the Mao Yisheng Science and Technology Education Foundation, the “Mao Yisheng Honor Class” was established. In the same year, the School initiated a joint postgraduate program with Southwest Jiaotong University. Currently, the School has 7 undergraduate programs, including: Civil Engineering (recognized as Hebei Provincial Comprehensive Reform Project Major, Provincial Demonstration Major for Application-Oriented Transformation, Provincial First-Class Undergraduate Major, and School-Level Brand Construction Major), Building Environment and Energy Application Engineering (Provincial First-Class Undergraduate Major and School-Level Characteristic Construction Major), Engineering Management (School-Level Characteristic Construction Major and School-Level First-Class Major), Water Science and Engineering (School-Level First-Class Major), Engineering Cost, Intelligent Construction, Building Electrical and Intelligent Engineering. In 2021, Green Building and Intelligent Construction Modern Industrial College was approved as one of the earliest modern industrial colleges in Hebei Province. In 2023, the Civil Engineering program was designated as Hebei Provincial Demonstration Major for Application-Oriented Transformation. Currently, the School has 1,705 enrolled students.
There are 86 teaching staff in the School, including 73 full-time faculty members, among whom over 30 are professors or associate professors, and 28 hold doctoral degrees. All full-time faculty members hold postgraduate degrees. The School has built a strong teaching and research team led by doctors and post-doctors graduated from prestigious institutions such as Tsinghua University and Tianjin University. Many faculty members have received different honorable titles, including one Hebei Provincial Excellent Scientific and Technological Worker, two Hebei “Three-Three-Three Talent Project” talents and one Hebei Provincial Teaching Master. Seven faculty members serve as postgraduate tutors for Southwest Jiaotong University and North China University of Science and Technology.
The School focuses on developing seven key teaching and research teams respectively specializing in Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Engineering Management and Advanced Construction Technology, Green Building Technology, Building Energy Efficiency and Environmental Protection, Water Resources and Water Engineering, as well as Engineering Surveying and Land Reclamation. Notable teaching achievements include: one National First-Class Course (Building Water Supply and Drainage Engineering), one Provincial Excellent Teaching Team (Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering Teaching Team), one Provincial-Level Top-Quality Online Open Course and Provincial First-Class Course ( Building Water Supply and Drainage Engineering), one Provincial-Level Curriculum Ideological and Political Demonstration Course (Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering), one Provincial Online-Offline Hybrid First-Class Course (Construction Engineering Estimation), one Provincial Integration Course of Specialty and Innovation (Principles and Applications of BIM Technology), as well as one Provincial-Level Top-Quality Online Open Course (Air Conditioning Engineering).
The School is equipped with extensive laboratory facilities, including seven laboratories, namely, Structure Laboratory, Soil Mechanics Laboratory, Building Materials Laboratory, Road and Bridge Laboratory, HVAC and Thermal Engineering Foundation Laboratory, Fluid Mechanics Laboratory, and Intelligent Operation and Maintenance Laboratory; four training centers, namely, Engineering Surveying Training Center, Building Equipment and Intelligentization Training Center, Intelligent Construction Comprehensive Training Center, Intelligent Water Affairs Training Center; as well as one Architectural Model Room. The laboratories cover an area of over 3,200 square meters and have over one thousand pieces of equipment with a total value of 25.94 million RMB.
The School boasts several provincial and municipal research platforms, including Hebei Key Laboratory of Construction Engineering and Tailings Comprehensive Utilization, “R&D Center for Construction Engineering and Energy-Saving Application Technology” of Hebei Universities, and Tangshan Municipal Key Laboratory of “Structure and Engineering Vibration”. In the past three years, the School undertook significant teaching and scientific research projects, including one national-level project, one teaching reform project supported by the Ministry of Education, over 10 provincial/ministerial projects, over 50 municipal/departmental projects, and numerous Horizontal Research Projects (Enterprise-Commissioned). It has received government funding of over 10 million RMB through Vertical Research Projects and won 3 provincial-level Science and Technology Awards and 2 provincial-level Teaching Awards. Faculty have published over 100 academic papers in Chinese core journals and nearly 50 papers in international journals indexed by SCI, EI and ISTP. Numerous research achievements have been recognized as nationally and internationally advanced.
In order to carry forward the engineering education philosophy of Mr. Mao Yisheng, the first “Mao Yisheng Honor Class” was established in September, 2013. To date, it has been recruiting and training students for 13 years with a total enrollment of 390 students and 270 graduates. Over 13 years, the class has inherited and practiced Mr. Mao’s engineering education principles such as “learning after practicing, and practicing while learning”, forming distinctive features in training models, competency development, and quality-oriented education.
To advance university-enterprise collaborative undergraduate education, explore talent training model reforms, and cultivate more professionals with engineering practice capabilities for local economic development, the School has signed “University-Industry Collaborative Education” agreements with over 30 enterprises, including China MCC22 Group Co., Ltd. and Tangshan Planning and Design Research Institute Co., Ltd. and has carried out reform of Joint Graduate Training Model. The School maintains sound employment partnerships with large central and state-owned enterprises such as China Railway, China State Construction, and PowerChina.
Focusing on smart cities, low-carbon buildings, new energy, and new industries, the School will deepen the integration of industry and education, collaborative education as well as university-industry cooperation for technological innovation based on Green Building and Intelligent Construction Modern Industrial College and the Demonstration Major for Transformation. It aims to continuously cultivate new type of civil engineering professionals equipped with green, digital, and intelligent capabilities who are “proficient in construction, knowledgeable in management, competent in design, and bold in innovation.”
